A TRUE AMERICAN HERO

Ben Franklin? Thomas Jefferson?  John Adams?  Big whoop.  The true American hero for an Independence Day celebration?  Joey Chestnut, the King of the Hot Dog, of course.  While the rest of us grab a cold beer, enjoy some fireworks or time on the beach, King Joey will be looking to earn a ninth consecutive title in the July 4 Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island.

And you think Joey just shows up to chow down on 60 plus dogs?  Not exactly.  “When I’m in training, I eat no solid food except hot dogs for six weeks,” Joey told a reporter recently.  In addition to the “dog only” diet, Joey does a few prep runs in which he knocks back as many as 70 hot dogs and buns.

Last year, Joey won his eighth straight title, consuming 61 hot dogs and buns. And, to keep him well rounded, Joey does not just stick to hot dogs.  He once ate nine pounds of turkey in ten minutes.  This year he expects, once again, to reign supreme, and win the $40k prize that goes to Nathan’s champ.

Imagine the fireworks after.

BULITT TAKES CARD GAME TO BARNES AND NOBLE

June was a busy month filled with CARD GAME release events. From Dominic’s in Silver Spring to Grillmarx in Olney as well as other appearances in Olney, Bethesda and Annapolis, DB and his wife, Julie, worked to spread the CARD GAME “word”.  A highlight of the month was DB’s signing at the Rockville BARNES AND NOBLE location on June 14.

We are looking forward to taking the CARD GAME bandwagon down south, for our next appearance at The Burger Bar in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on July 16.

Thanks to all for coming out and supporting DB, Julie and the book!

READ DB’S INTERVIEW ON THE INDIE SITE, “UNDERGROUND BOOK REVIEWS”

Here at the Underground, our goal is to promote as many quality indie authors as we can. Toward this end, we’re continuing Author Spotlight Thursdays.

Please welcome David Bulitt.

If you had a writing motto, what would it be?
Show me, don’t tell me.

Where do you draw your inspiration?
For the first book, its a friendship and family driven kind of thing. As a divorce lawyer, I see so much of what goes on in people’s lives. Ultimately, I think people are interested in hearing about what goes on when my office door closes and I do my best to tap into that as well. I have had a fair share of experience with mental illness, both in my personal and professional life. That gets a little play in CARD GAME, issues surrounding mental health as well as adoption come to the forefront in my second book, “Because I Had To”.

What’s one interesting fact about you?
My favorite description comes from a client, who called me, “the non-shaving, motorcycle-riding, bourbon-drinking, non-lawyer, lawyer.” I hope to pop that on a poster one day.

Have you learned anything from the self-publishing process? Would you do anything differently next time?
Patience, something I was not blessed with, is an absolute necessity. With this book, one I have been thinking about writing for several years while my kids grew up, I was so excited to finish it that I did not take enough time to edit and tweak things before trying to get it out and reviewed in manuscript form. With my second book, “Because I Had to”, I will make sure it is “ready to hatch” before starting to shop it around.

What has been your most successful marketing strategy?
Aggression. Really. I have done all I can to attack every angle: internet marketing through my website, social media (Facebook, Twitter, GoodReads), book clubs, book fairs, release events. I have sent out press releases to local papers and, for me, the cross selling (my divorce lawyer background along with the writing) has been helpful.

What’s the best kept secret you’ve found in regard to indie publishing?
Make no mistake. It is a job. I spend at least one hour a day devoted to promoting the book and my platform as an author.
